Its big wheels and easy manoeuvrability are unfazed by narrow and cobbled streets. Its sporty performance makes mincemeat of traffic jams. Its practical accommodation carries all kinds of passengers and cargo. In short, its a time-proven and invaluable companion to millions of commuters, experienced riders and busy people of all ages, and often a rite of passage for young and first-time riders.
In 2001 the SH125 and SH150 were launched, and wasted no time in speeding to the head of the European popularity stakes, where they have held the coveted position of top registered scooter ever since. At first glance, there would seem to be no need for improvement on such a winning formula. Nevertheless, Honda has presented us with a totally refreshed and bang up-to-date package. It incorporates more practicality, comfort and safety for the commuters who make up a large section of its fan base, sharp new styling and a choice of mouth-watering new colours that reflect its vibrant character and wide appeal.
The update is a direct response to the continually evolving circumstances of city life. The escalating number of cars on our roads means that the search for ways to beat congestion problems is becoming a daily challenge in most cities. Fuel prices are an increasing concern, and so is the impact of our motorised transport on the local and global environment. In addition, customers of all ages are increasingly discerning and expect the vehicle of their choice, whether its a scooter or a car, to be both fashionable and versatile enough for a number of purposes. Two-wheel transport is an increasingly attractive option; the general populace is looking afresh at scooters, and in particular the SH, as a smart, economical, practical and often faster way of getting around town. The new SH125i/SH150i is Hondas answer to the increasing demands placed on urban and in particular commuter transport. Honda has updated the design, improved the braking system and revitalised the most important and appreciated elements of this scooter - classic styling, ease of operation and joy of ownership.
A quick look at the SH125i/SH150is front profile reveals a lot about the direction of its new design. Maintaining the attractive basis of its familiar lines, the new front area is a little higher and more defined, giving it a more contemporary edge. The front-mounted radiator and upper headlight cowl keep their simple appeal while gaining a sleeker, more tapered profile. The long, sloping clear-lens position lights and indicators with amber-coloured bulbs affirm a chic practicality. The clear-lens multi-reflector headlight adds to the visual impact, while also providing excellent night-time visibility over a wide area. The front is crowned with a small, sporty windscreen which, combined with the wide curves of the front bodywork, offers welcome protection from buffeting winds. For those who prefer more (or less) protection, this windscreen can be easily removed and an elegant Genuine Honda replacement fitted, without affecting the flawless profile and finish. The steering head integrates an attractive, large-face meter panel with a central easy-to-read speedometer, surrounded by coolant temperature and fuel gauges, indicator lights and an LCD clock.
The rear shape has also had a makeover. Its lengthened and smoothened lines exude shining Honda sophistication, again with a more contemporary edge. The tapered tail shape culminates in a unique and eye-catching tail-light with a form that flows back into the lines of the complete silhouette.
The overall look is smooth, clean and fresh. The bodywork is smart and attractive. The paint finish is impeccable and thoughtful details such as the practical fold-away footsteps, finished in the same colour as the lower body parts make that all-important difference between basic A-to-B transport, and a fashionable lifestyle accessory. Hondas intentions in this direction are made obvious in a beautifully integrated decorative bar alongside the seat, proudly bearing a new embossed 3D SH125i/SH150i logo. Its a detail that expresses quality and prestige and will add to the pride in owning this desirable machine.
In fact, every aspect of the new SH125i/SH150is design would seem to be conceived to complement the most style-conscious rider. The wide, flat footboard is not only practical for carrying all kinds of objects; it also keeps muddy splashes off clothes and shoes. The low seat and upright riding position are comfortable and relaxed enough to ensure a cool, unflustered ride even for shorter riders and beginners. The seat is broad and comfortable leaving plenty of room to move around and enhancing the overall feeling of assurance. This is a confidence-building and superior machine whose every detail, from the most astute technology to the cleverest practicalities and the most careful style elements, will make its rider feel confident and in control. In other words, its designed to make you feel good!
Reliable and practical
At the centre of the SH125i/SH150is legendary reliability dwells a robust and dependable fuel injected, liquid-cooled 4-stroke engine with a rugged V-Matic belt-converter transmission that delivers smooth and assured power. Low-to-midrange torque is gratifyingly strong, providing quick take-offs and nippy acceleration away from the lights, even with a passenger on board. The electronic fuel injection system is smoothly efficient and the highly responsive fully digital electronic ignition accurately optimises combustion characteristics in all starting and riding conditions. The engine is compact, adding to the agile overall handling. Just under the headlight, its distinctive forward-facing radiator continually receives a full blast of cooling air assuring stable operating temperatures and performance even on hot summer days.
Clean and quiet
The engine features a HECS3 oxygen-sensing catalytic exhaust gas converter system which keeps harmful emissions to a minimum and easily meets the demands of EURO-3 emissions regulations. Completely integrated into the throttle body ECU, and complemented by an oxygen sensor installed in the exhaust system, the system monitors the fuel injection systems sensors. The result is precise maintenance of the optimal fuel/air mixture to most efficiently perform the job of minimising carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrous oxides (NOX) which pollute the air. Integrated into the design of a small 125/150cc engine, this high-accuracy system ensures some of the cleanest emissions to found in any vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. Partly due to its liquid-cooled configuration, engine operation is also remarkably quiet, complementing the relaxing and enjoyable ride experience.
Economical
With fuel prices on the rise, the SH125i/SH150is exemplary fuel economy is also a welcome treat for the wallet. The 7.5-litre fuel tank ekes out seemingly endless mileage between fill-ups. In combination with the minimal maintenance costs it makes the SH125i/SH150i a very attractive alternative to a four-wheel vehicle and a winning choice for younger riders in particular.
Easy handling
A city scooter needs to be lithe enough for easy manoeuvring in heavy traffic and tight spots. The SH125i/SH150is compact, rigidly constructed tubular steel frame provides reassuring stability and sweet, light handling, both in slow city traffic and when you have an opportunity to let the speed build up a little. This is complemented by the big, road-holding 16" wheels and compliant suspension systems giving superb comfort, stability and safety when riding over bumpy surfaces and cobbled streets.
New rear disc brake
The safe feeling of solid control is enhanced by the replacement of the rear drum brake with a mechanical disc brake. The new hydraulic Combined disc brake system adds to the feeling of balance and stability, providing powerful, progressive stopping force that builds confidence.
Lower seat with more legroom
The comfortably low seat is a popular SH feature, creating a relaxed, easy riding position and also enhancing the ease of handling in low-speed traffic where a reassuring foot on the ground may be needed. This year the seat is lowered by 1cm, making it a good 2,5 cm lower than its nearest competitor and adding to the scooters wide-ranging appeal. Theres also plenty of wide, comfortable seat space for a passenger, with extendable footsteps for a secure foothold and a sturdy grab handle that doubles up as a rear carrier and base for a Honda Genuine top box. The seat opens up to reveal space for a helmet and other essentials. This space is complemented by a handy retractable hook up front. And for when youre loading, unloading or just parked up, the new SH125i/SH150i has a convenient mainstand that offers excellent support even on uneven surfaces.
The low, wide, step-through footboard is not only immensely practical as a stable, flat surface upon which to transport all kinds of objects and equipment. It also leaves plenty of leg space and adds to the overall feeling of comfort and poise. This year, the leg space has been increased by 2cm making the SH125i/SH150i an incredibly comfortable as well as practical commuter. The overall package makes for cool, confident and highly enjoyable riding in all situations, as much a part of the SH125i/SH150is styling as its exterior profile and bodywork. If youre looking for an easy, economical and, above all, fun scooter that will take you anywhere in style and give you a confident, feel-good ride quality, take the new SH125i/SH150i for a spin. Youll never look back!
